How Construction Safety Week unfolded across the globe at Yondr

Monday 5 May marked the start of Construction Safety Week, a five-day global initiative that raises awareness of the importance of health and safety.

Yondr and our supply chain partners took action to assess, promote and educate on the topic, balancing engagement with entertainment. Across various sites we demonstrated health and safety processes – here’s a glimpse of how the week unfolded.

Teams in Toronto, Canada, showed their safety-first culture and boosted morale with a series of educational and entertaining events. There were raffles, games and ‘toolbox talks’ – t-shirts too. Gift cards were awarded for workers observed following safety rules for high-risk tasks.

Duly named ‘Work Safe, Home Safe’, the week’s campaign saw workers sign loved ones’ names on a ‘Why We Work Safe’ board that will be displayed at the Toronto site entrance.

The team also revealed its new PepTalk kiosks. Designed for deskless employees, workers check in to the kiosks to give direct, anonymised feedback on site morale and psychological hazards.

A charity raffle raised money for Threads of Life – supporting families who’ve lost loved ones to workplace incidents.

But the highlight for our Canadian contingent was the mourning dove who chose to nest on an excavator, providing the perfect opportunity to manage a risk (and the environment) safely.

In Frankfurt, Germany, the focus was on working at height. Subcontractors performed inspections and demonstrated procedures during a simulated emergency. Facility tours showcased the great work done to date on a site that’s nearing its final completion milestone.

Our Slough team in London focused on Stop the Drop and spill training, with presentations on each. The practical and interactive demonstration of the drop impact of items such as bolts, screwdrivers and blocks of wood resonated with many. While rescue demonstrations by a theatre company brought emergency scenarios to life.

Finally, our team in Northern Virginia, US, ran daily demonstrations and highlighted important safety messaging. Planning with precision, owning your part and identifying high-energy hazards were discussed. Demonstrations of Milwaukee tools, rotating vertical mast lifts and fall protection took place. An appreciation lunch and raffle prizes rounded off the week alongside the team’s final topic: commit to excellence.

Health and safety goes beyond one week. Our teams will keep up the momentum with rewards and awareness, recognition and presence on site. And you’ll be delighted to learn the dove is still safely nesting and will be appropriately relocated only when necessary.
