When Mark Avery, Senior VP of Design & Construction APAC, encountered inspiring Australian artwork, he spotted a unique opportunity. One that would merge art, technology, and community – and create fresh perspectives on the data center industry.
In line with our Social Impact Strategy to be a Welcome Neighbour and Global Citizen, Yondr had already worked with SK LKTP Bukit Batu, a school near our Johor data center that reflects Malaysia’s rich ethnic diversity with its mix of Malay, Chinese, and Tamil students.
We invited students to take part in an art competition inspired by the question: “What is a data center?” Initially met with puzzled faces, we expanded the theme to include AI and robotics, sparking the students’ curiosity and creativity.
Over 300 children, from ages five to twelve, eagerly participated, supported by 10 dedicated Yondr volunteers who also brought art supplies for the school.
Following a warm welcome from teachers and students, the pupils embraced the chance to blend creativity with technology and learn more about their data center neighbour.
The most talented young artists were awarded vouchers from a local bookstore during a prize-giving ceremony. Their artwork will be printed, framed and proudly displayed on the walls of the Johor data center and featured at the school’s next parents’ and teachers’ day.
Mark Avery said: “This was a fun way to connect with our local community and gain fresh insight into the technologies we work with. The kids were incredible, and we hope our engagement leaves a lasting, positive impact.”
Exploring the tech world through kids’ eyes gave us a fresh perspective on how they see us, and where we could bridge the gap of educating those who may not be familiar with the data center industry.
